EDITORS’ NOTES
It'd be hard to call this sophomore effort "raucous"—it's not by a long shot—but Riot on an Empty Street sees Kings of Convenience a little more relaxed about their need to remain acoustic and whisper-quiet compared to their first effort, Quiet Is the New Loud. Incorporating electric(!) guitars, strings, and guest appearances by their former opening act Feist, Riot overall feels more upbeat and celebratory. Still, the opening "Homesick" represents the band at its core: solemn, slightly mournful, and somehow uplifting in its melancholy. "I'd Rather Dance with You," on the other hand, is more reminiscent of Erland Øye's side projects as it ever-so-subtly borrows a pop sensibility and is complemented by a borderline-goofy video of unabashed "awkward white-guy dancing." There's a definite intimacy in their work, but Kings of Convenience are never too close for comfort; they extend an invitation to their living room instead of ringing your doorbell.
