About my bloody valentine
Like the Velvet Underground, Sonic Youth, and the Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine redefined what noise meant within the context of pop music. The group started out as a doomy post-punk outfit, but by the time of 1988's Isn't Anything, they merged ethereal melodies with crushingly loud, shimmering distortion. Though their lack of movement on-stage was branded "shoegazing" by the British music press, legions of other shoegazers followed in their wake. As shoegaze reached its peak, My Bloody Valentine released 1991's groundbreaking Loveless, which was such a towering achievement that following it proved difficult for the band. Even in their absence, they were profoundly influential on groups such as Smashing Pumpkins later in the '90s and the subsequent generations of shoegazers in the 2000s and beyond. When My Bloody Valentine returned with 2013's mbv, it reaffirmed that no matter how many bands they influenced, their mystique was inimitable.
