About D12
Led by Eminem, the Detroit rap group D12 shook up the ’00s hip-hop scene with brash lyricism and swagger to spare.
• D12—short for the Dirty Dozen—formed in 1996 with Eminem as a transitional member. The group consisted of six MCs, each with his own alter ego.
• After the multi-platinum success of his 1999 major label debut, The Slim Shady LP, Eminem signed D12 to his Shady Records label. He rejoined the group following the murder of member Bugz in May 1999.
• The group’s 2001 debut album, Devil’s Night, reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200.
• Eminem reunited the sextet for several of his albums, including 2000’s The Marshall Mathers LP, 2002’s The Eminem Show, 2002’s 8 Mile soundtrack, and 2004’s Encore.
• D12 returned to the top of the Billboard 200 with their 2004 sophomore album, D12 World, featuring production from West Coast legend Dr. Dre and a Chicago newcomer named Kanye West. Lead single “My Band” was a Top 10 hit.
• The collective sans Eminem appeared in the 2005 Adam Sandler film The Longest Yard. D12 contributed "My Ballz" to the soundtrack.
• Group cofounder Proof was shot and killed in 2006.
• Eminem declared D12 to be “over” on “Stepping Stone,” off his 2018 Kamikaze album.
