Doves - 6 Albums |
About Doves Formed out of the ashes of Madchester band Sub Sub, Doves took flight in 1998, leading a mighty flock of post-Britpop powerhouses in the 2000s. The trio—comprising Jimi Goodwin (lead vocalist/bassist) and twin brothers Jez Williams (guitarist) and Andy Williams (drummer)—spent their formative years at Manchester’s iconic club The Hacienda and producing glittery alt-dance as Sub Sub until their studio burned down. The incident inspired them to refocus and transform their hypnotic house grooves into melancholic post-club melodies. Their first collection of slow-burning guitar epics, 2000’s Lost Souls, came out mere months before Coldplay’s own debut, Parachutes—just one reason the two bands would be continually compared. But even when Doves hit big with transcendent alt-rock anthems like “There Goes the Fear” (from 2002’s dense rock drama The Last Broadcast), they set their sound apart, infusing it with heavy doses of Northern soul, space rock, and orchestral pop over two more releases. While they kept quiet throughout the 2010s, the trio reunited for 2020’s The Universal Want, boosting their cathartic symphonies with touches of dub and nods to their dance days—proving they hadn’t missed a beat.
