Rich and soulful, Albanese’s multilayered album takes the listener on a journey that visits his home city of Berlin, his Italian mother’s house by the sea, and his newborn child. However, with its tapestry of beautiful textures—including strings, acoustic and electric pianos, Hammond organ, and synths—this album will evoke memories in us all. “Mauer Blues,” a musing on the Berlin Wall, blends the warmth of a closely miked piano with the thrilling coolness of electronica. “Boardwalk” is an inspired blend of acoustic and digital, while the title track is resonant and intense.
