EDITORS’ NOTES
Following the trajectory set on 2015’s Girls in Peacetime Want to Dance, the first in Belle and Sebastian’s three-part EP series finds the indie pop institution continuing to flirt with the dance floor—from the breezy ’70s soul-disco of “Sweet Dew Lee” to the breakbeats of “We Were Beautiful,” which explores the anxiety of aging with the kind-but-unsparing eye the band is known for. Best of all is “The Girl Doesn’t Get It,” a chipper piece of synth-pop that turns a loner’s lament (a classic B&S trope) into a rallying cry for the disenfranchised. “Are you living or waiting,” singer Stuart Murdoch wonders, “For the time to get better?”
