About the Movie
Washed-up history professor Lewis Birch (Griffin Dunne) takes his begrudging teenagers on a road trip to a conference in hopes of jumpstarting his career and reconnecting with his kids. But, when Lewis’s estranged father goes missing on a Lewis and Clark historical reenactment trek, they're forced to make a family detour. The Birch family find themselves on a journey of discovery and connection as they make their own passage across America.

　　生活、工作都不如意的作家路易斯带着正处在假期中的儿子杰克和女儿佐伊一起前往俄亥冈州度假。途中，路易斯得知长年与自己关系疏远的母亲病重，无奈之下，三人决定乘坐早班机前去探望。到家的路易斯发现母亲已经去世，极度悲伤的父亲斯坦利也患上了心理疾病，不肯与人交流。与父亲关系尴尬的路易斯准备带着杰克和佐伊离开，却发现父亲斯坦利不见了。几经找寻，路易思在发现者探险小队中找到了斯坦利。见到神志不清的父亲，路易斯决定带着杰克和佐伊一起加入小队，治疗父亲的心理问题。这时三人才发现，这只探险小队是以最原始的生活形态进行探险，完全自给自足。生活和思想上的诸多不同让杰克和佐伊十分为难。在路易斯的帮助下，两人与父亲亲近起来。关系的好转也让路易斯理解了父亲斯坦利的心，路易斯试着走进斯坦利的生活，与他交谈。慢慢地，斯坦利与路易斯敞开心扉，打开了多年的心结。祖孙三代找回了属于他们的亲情并且踏上了新的旅程。
